This Silent Killer is Claiming Even More Lives
In spite of all the desperate warnings, people in the United States are consuming more processed food as compared to the previous decades.
More than half of the calories consumed by Americans are from fast food, pizza, and other high-calorie foods. In the last 15 years, their intake has increased by 4 percent.
Whole foods, on the other hand, account for just 27% of all calories consumed in the United States.
According to researchers at New York University, fast food diet is causing prolonged illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, and heart problems while also raising the danger of a severe Covid infection.
The researchers examined the diets of over 41,000 Americans and traced them from 2001 to 2018.
Fast food, sweets, and most breakfast cereals were included in this study. Processed foods—including soda, frozen pizza, soda, fast food, and sweetbreads—accounted for 57% of total calories.
Researchers discovered that the more processed foods people ate, the more likely they were to be obese or overweight, with those over 60 years old eating the most. With a sharp increase among those over 60, only Hispanics and university students were eating less.
The rise in food delivery may be partly attributed to the new Covid lockdowns when people have been shopping less and depend more on home deliveries and takeouts.
It's time to rethink food assessment, according to the researchers.
"The majority of the foods that are sold to us are manufactured formulations that are extracted from whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. Nonetheless, nutritional science has traditionally focused on nutrients and overlooked the health consequences of modern food processing," according to one of the experts, Filippa Juul.
